[Makie has had the facts of this place explained to her already, by a gentleman in a... fairly awkward situation.
It doesn't prepare her for the reality of a village with occupants like none she's ever seen before. Some of you aren't even human, Luceti. The hell. She wanders the path of the village from Community Building #1 down toward the plaza still in her New Feather dress, just like a gawking tourist, and spends some time staring at the fountain and plaza itself. Uh.
...right. Okay. Time to begin glancing through various shops in her attempts to find the places she was told her things would be. She finds her clothes with a measure of relief, and her shamisen at the item store-- and after she picks it up, she frowns. It's too light. She doesn't need to open it to know she's missing something.
Eventually, she'll find her way into the forge to pick up the last of her things, pays a visit to the Welcome Centre-- and then finally fetches up at the tea shop, which is the most familiar-looking thing here.
...sort of. Never really loses that dazed and confused look.]

Although he was definitely sure there was no one in the apartment before he went to take a shower. So naturally, he was taken aback after he finished his shower and pulled to curtain to suddenly find a woman he had never seen before in his bathtub.]
How...? [Very few things normally surprise him in a place like Luceti, but sometimes it still catches him off guard. Noting the woman's clothes, she must have been new...and slowly all the pieces come together. Looking irritable, he decides not to wake her up just yet. He's...not exactly wearing anything right now and he's sure seeing someone indecent would be the last thing this woman wanted to see. So, he's going to attempt to leave the bathroom to get his clothes first.]
[Action]
--and whatever she's lying on is far less comfortable than the mat she curled up on the night before. Her shoulderblades feel stiff and sore, and though she thinks maybe she just...rolled onto the hard floor in the night, it's enough to get her moving...
...and she cracks open an eye just in time to see a naked man disappear from the room.
WELP.
Wonderful thing to wake up to, Alexei. She won't make a sound. Not until he leaves the room, at any rate-- though he could still turn to catch her staring at him before he goes.]
[Action]
...Yea, this is really off to a good start and he can feel himself being more embarrass than he already is. He's just very good at hiding the fact in front of her. So he'll turn his head back around and just--]
Pardon me for a moment. [Clothes. Let's go get them now. God damn this place. He's actually going red in the face. She can't see it, so it's ok. The initial reaction will go away soon.]
[Action] 1/2
[Action]
...
...yeah, it's about now she realises she's lying prone in a bathtub.
She's pretty sure this flophouse didn't have one of these.
She struggles up, wincing at the tenderness in her back, and flatly ignores the journal that slides to one side of her as she glances down and realises this isn't what she went to sleep in, either. In fact, she's decidedly underdressed in a shift that's just plain strangely made. And her shamisen is nowhere to be seen in this... room...
They didn't make bathrooms like this in the 18th century, okay. But Makie is less concerned with the decor and more with the possible reason she's here, because the only reasons she can think of are bad ones, and they've taken her shamisen away.
Time to investigate the cabinet drawers for something sharp.]
[Action]
Anyway, while she's doing that Alexei's getting himself some clothes on. Nice to not be wearing a hospital gown anymore. Vaguely he can hear her moving in the bathroom. If she's new she is likely confuse.]
I suppose you're wondering how you found yourself in someone's tub. [He decides to try and have some small talk. Talking like this at least was a little easier.]
[Action]
Oh, he's talking. She pauses, then gives up on the search as a lost cause, sitting on the edge of the bath. The mystery naked man is being polite, at least.]
...yes. [Her voice is likely too quiet to be heard through the wall, and she raises it as much as she dares. Which isn't all that much, but she can just be heard.] Where am I?
[Action]
You are in a village call Luceti. To be more precise, you are in one of the community buildings right now.
[Action]
That doesn't make her feel reassured, for some odd reason.]
Why am I here?
[Action]
I can tell you how, but not why. [Right, he's got some clothes on now. Let's go talk to this woman properly]
We were all brought here by an unknown force. People simply call them shifts, abnormalities that happen that can alter the environment around us or ourselves. [He's at the doorway now.] Unfortunately, now that you're here, it'll be difficult for you to leave.
[Action]
But she doesn't think he's lying. Not...deliberately.]
Will someone stop me if I try?
[Action]
Do you believe in worlds existing outside of your own?
[Action]
[Action]
[As he wasn't wearing his armor or the cape, his wings weren't hidden like they usually were. At the moment though, they're folded up.]
[Action]
But...
...she stands.]
This is not my... [Wow, this dress doesn't cover much. :|] Forgive my state of undress. [Still erring on the polite side of things for now. She glances at him warily.] Do you know where my belongings are?
[Action]
[Action]
I can go anywhere in this village? I am not a prisoner?
[Action]
...No, you're not. You're free to go anywhere in this village. [that second question seemed odd to him.] If you would like, I can escort you to the central plaza where the shops are.
[Action]
That won't be necessary, but thank you. Although I feel I should know more before I set out. Could we...perhaps talk somewhere less... [She gestures vaguely at hte bathroom. Less personal? More comfortable? Less bathroom-y....]
[Action]
I don't believe we've properly introduced ourselves. My name is Alexei.
[Action]
--it's really rude not to introduce yourself, Makie. But she's gone dead silent, staring in horror at the wings on Alexei's back :|]
[Action]
...
You know what? He'll just point to her wings, because yes you have them too.]
This is normal in this village.
[Action]
Yes, she stops that in a hurry. But SO MUCH MENTAL KEYSMASHING]
How--?
[Action]
[his own wings shudder slightly, as if aware it's being spoken about.] You need to be careful with them. They are a part of you while you are here and you can die if they are ever removed.
[Action]
--they fluttered. Because she thought about it, or--
--uh.
...you know what, let's talk about something else. She steps decisively away from the mirror, though the colour has yet to return to her face. (though really, given she's so pale already it's not much difference.)]
Does anything about this place make sense?
[Action]
I wouldn't be able to tell you that as anything can and will happen here. It's best to keep an open mind here.
[Action]
...my name is Makie Otono-Tachibana. [Now that she remembers her manners. She still sounds distracted; now she knows they're there, Makie wonders how she ever missed the presence of the wings. They feel so heavy.]
[Action]
How about we move to the living room? I'll make us some tea and we can continue our discussion.
[Action]
[Lead me out of here like a gentleman, commandant. It's been a bad day. :(]

Hello!
no subject
Hello. I've...
...just arrived. [Still shellshocked, yup.] I was told I might find information or a place to stay here.
no subject
Well you came to the right place! My name's Aang. I can help you with that and any other questions you've got.
no subject
no subject
no subject
For a few seconds. Before she blinks.] Oh...
Forgive my rudeness, sir. My name is Makie Otono-Tachibana. [Introductions should be matched. She's really not on the ball.]
no subject
Please, it's not problem. That's a very nice name. It's nice to meet you, Makie!

I believe we will, one day. Until then... we just have to wait and have a positive attitude! And if it's any comfort, as strange as some of these people can be, most of them are really friendly.

...first...things first...?]
I suppose I first ought to find a place to stay. Then... whatever comes after. What sort of work is there?
no subject
[And he pulls out an up-to-dateish version of the housing list to begin checking for vacant places.]

I've heard that nothing in this town has a price. Is that so?

...although she has nothing to offer the tea shop, except her services or her singing. Perhaps she'll ask what is needed when she's up there.
That's if some military jerk doesn't take it out of her hands]I shall have to find something to do to occupy my time.
no subject
Upstairs, he adjusts his glasses while wondering why his ears are burning.]If you'd like! What kinds of things do you like to do?
no subject
I can play. And sing. But that... is probably not as useful as other things I could contribute.
no subject
Really? That's great! Don't get down about it yet, it sounds like it'd be super useful in helping people feel better. I love music! But what other things do you think you can contribute?

He was certain that no one would be in his path. But there is, as he moves at an incredible speed towards her. He tries to take measures to avoid her, but he starts by shouting at the top of his lungs.]
MISS! I DO NOT WISH TO BARREL INTO YOU!
no subject
She's surprised enough she nearly lets him barrel right into her on the sidewalk, but reflexes take over soon enough and she neatly sidesteps, turning to continue gaping at him as he barrels on past. THE PEOPLE IN THIS TOWN ARE WEIRD.]
no subject
no subject
That was both impressive and... painful-looking. And not at all amusing. Really. She has better manners than that.]
Are you all right?
no subject
I am very fine! See? But how about you? I did not injure you in any way, did I? I was very concerned!

No. You missed. You're running very fast, though. If you're in a hurry, don't let me stop you.

[He then turns to the side and does some punches and kicks at the empty air.]
I am a ninja.

A ninja? Truly?
[In that garb?]
Where are you from?
no subject
I hail from Konoha Village, in the Land of Fire! I am most truthfully a ninja!
no subject
You are quite open about this fact. [She's... not all that worried. Well, hardly as if Makie ever had a reason to cross paths with the Shogunate's more secretive branch in any case. In fact, with the bright green, she wonders if he's just playing.]

I see. And what better way to face everything that you know should be completely impossible than with with a cup of tea?
no subject

Still, she picks one of the most popular she can think of. Perhaps it has made its way here.]
Sencha.
no subject
no subject
She doesn't much like him, on first impression. But even so.] Thank you, sir. It's most gracious of you.
no subject
Mm, I doubt such an insignificant trifle warrants that much gratitude. What's your name?
no subject
I am Makie Otono-Tachibana. [After a beat, just in case:] From Edo, in Japan. [If that even means anything here.]
no subject
Ah, I believe I may have come across such a place in my readings. You must be from one of those "Earth" places, in that case. [He gives an adjustment of his glasses.] As for me, I'm Colonel Jade Curtiss.
no subject
Colonel... she's not sure if that's his name or a title. As she's already sitting down and he's arrogant to boot, Makie will just incline her head out of courtesy.] I'm honoured to meet you, sir.
[Yep. All formality.]
Are you another resident here? [Or someone actually in charge? Let's find out.]
no subject
no subject
Which makes her wonder what he wants.]
I see. You must be quite proud.
[The thing is she's so straight-faced and grave that she might not actually be sarcastic. Then again, she might.]
no subject
Me? Oh, never. I am well known for being a model image of humility. I wouldn't want my ego to swell, now, would I?
no subject
I thank you for the tea. [For here it comes via serving tray.] Is there something I can help you with?
no subject
no subject
[Sip.]
no subject
no subject
In our world, there are only humans that possess intelligence. We have no 'magic', but... [She thinks of Manji's bloodworms. And decides it's disrespectful to go into detail there.] ...there are always rumours of such things existing.
Fonon means nothing to me. As for "technology"... I am unsure. There are tales of advanced medical knowledge on the continent and in other, far off places. [It's the word 'advanced' that makes her wonder if he's talking about knowledge and learning. Technology, on the other hand, is an unfamiliar concept.]
no subject
Ah, it sounds like you're far behind the rest of the multiverse, in that case. A fairly mundane-sounding existence to be sure. So many things here must be unfamiliar to you in ways that must be confusing and possibly horrifying.
no subject
[If that gives more of an indication.]
no subject
no subject
I am "behind" in comparison, sir. Not ignorant.
no subject
[He briefly sips some tea.]
Electricity could be considered to be like taming lightning and keeping it in your walls, channeling its power for the most mundane of uses.

[She also said not to stick metal into it, but let's not give Jade any further ammunition for snark.]

She'll find out the hard way eventually]I'll be sure to keep that in mind, then. Thank you.
no subject
no subject
Good day to you then, Colonel Curtiss.
no subject
Good day to you as well, Makie. May your adjustment process here be simply engaging.
no subject
You know, if I were you I think I'd look at the fountain after I found some warmer clothes to wear.
no subject
...ah. Yes. You're right. [She smooths down the dress selfconsciously.] I'd just never seen... this before.
[Or, you know. Anything here.]
no subject
You from a desert town?
no subject
[It's pretty.]
no subject
no subject
[It's a distracted non-response, really. But after a moment, Makie reminds herself the man has a point. She glances across the plaza at the different shop fronts.]
If I had a musical instrument, which store would I look in?
no subject
[But he's also ready to admit that maybe he hasn't been out of the desert long enough for spring to feel rather cold to him.]
no subject
Thank you for your help, sir. [And she starts crossing the plaza to the clothing store.]
no subject
So! You must be new here! But you already know where to find your things! So has someone explained this place to you?
no subject
They have, yes. I woke up in the apartment of a gentleman who was kind enough to explain. [Just how she woke up is between her and Alexei, okay >_>]
no subject
[Of course, Makie might have asked for some time alone. Vash decides to ignore that very good point.]
no subject
If you'd care to walk me to the stores, sir, they are only a few steps away.
no subject
[Excuse him a moment. You're getting awfully close to the door. Let him just rush ahead in a blur of motion to open it for you.] There you are ah- [Crap. Didn't get her name!] -my lost flower!

They're shoes. [How to describe.] Sandals. Open toe, with a thong that runs between the toes. [She makes an upside V motion with her finger.]
no subject
Open toe sandals. Thong between the toes - those! Nope. Those aren't them.
no subject
Makie folds her clothes over one arm and glances back to Vash, then uncertainly around the room.
...there. A small room with a door that looks empty. She can get changed in privacy. The door closes after her with a soft click.
Happy hunting, Vash.]
no subject
Holding the shoes of course for her inspection like a proud puppy for when she comes out again.]
Are these the right ones, Miss Makie!?

But after a moment, she smiles.]
Yes. [She reaches out a hand to take them, bending to slide them onto her feet.] Thank you for your assistance.

Instead, after she gets over her first view of the shop, she shakes her head slightly and begins moving through the store looking for her shamisen. If she gets distracted by the unfamiliar, she'll be here all day.
...there. Resting on top of a cardboard box. Nobody's had time to put it on display yet. She moves for it.]

Otherwise, you could follow me home if you want to meet my cats.
They're very cute. You know, when they're not destroying things.

.. Ah. Yes, I'm alright.. I just think I walked into something. [ .. she doesn't even realise. ]

no subject
Then she slowly starts making a bow right after. ]
In that case.. I apologize. I didn't mean to bump into you..
no subject
[The bow cinches it.] You're Japanese, aren't you?
no subject
[ She realises this should be the time for a formal introduction, so she makes sure to stand straight and all that. Her words are sort of mechanic, like she's spoken them many times before - or just practiced them a lot. It almost makes her sound like some robot. ]
My name is Kotomi Ichinose, a senior from class A back home. My hobby is reading. When refering to me, please call me "Kotomi-chan".
no subject
It's a pleasure to meet you, Kotomi-chan. My name is Makie Otono-Tachibana. You may call me what you feel comfortable with.
no subject
[ Despite the other girl being older.. but Kotomi likes putting it that way, okay. Especially if they're going to be friends. .. Ah, wait, at least she's realising now that she's just assuming it, isn't she? ]
.. Since.. I'd like it if we could become friends.. maybe.
no subject
I think we could become friends. It's good to see other people here from my own country.
no subject
I guess the Malnosso like Japan.
no subject
What part of Japan are you from, Kotomi-chan?
no subject
no subject
I'm from Edo... of... no particular district. [Not anymore, anyway.]
no subject
Maybe we just lived near each other all this time and never realised. Wouldn't that be weird..?
no subject
no subject
Maybe.. one and a half years..? Something like that.

no subject
They're.. dead.
no subject
I'm sorry. I shouldn't have asked.
no subject
They've been gone for a really, really long time already.
no subject
Do you have friends here?

I have a lot of precious friends here. I'm really, really grateful for all of them. And I'm even Ikki-kun's precious treasure.
no subject

I wonder if others from my... well. Others that I know. I wonder if they might arrive.

[ Maybe she's trying to reassure the other person a little, but.. well, it's true there's a chance. Kotomi's not the type to lie. ]
I mean.. people from my world have been here a lot before too. So I'm sure people from Makie-chan's world will be here too.
no subject
no subject
no subject
...well, she'd like it here. [...it's more free.]
no subject
Then I'll hope for her to turn up here along with you. If both Makie-chan and I are hoping, there's already more hope for it. So the chance is bigger.
no subject
no subject
I'll tell her. And then maybe when the three of us are all here, we can do something fun.. like have a tea party. Isn't that what people do to have fun?
no subject
--no seriously, she looks a little taken aback by that. For a moment. A tea...party? Is that like a tea ceremony or--
--well, she can grasp the general concept.]
I think that would be lovely, Kotomi-chan.

.. Really..? [ Her face lights up. Quite a bit - it's a blank smile, but still pretty big.. ] I'm so glad..! I've never had a tea party before here..

The best one we've ever had. [That's possibly a joke.]
[Action]
Smiling cheerfully, the goddess approaches, dipping her head slightly in greeting. Not so far as to be deferential, but enough to be polite. Her own clothes might be familiar enough to Makie as well, a blue-green kimono decorated in the elaborate styles of the Muromachi courts, complete with embroidery in a fine gold thread. She aims to dress to impress after all!]
Good afternoon, miss.
[Action]
Her return bow is deep enough to mark respect for a woman of higher station, because manners. But Makie really is very happy to find you.]
Good afternoon. [Encouraged by that smile, she adds more candidly:] It's... quite a relief to see you.
[Action]
It's...nice to see you as well. Though I fear I do not remember you, if we have met previously.
[Silently, she hopes she's not slipping again.]
[Action]
My name is Makie Otono-Tachibana.
[Action]
Shaking her head, she smiles warmly]
A pleasure to meet you. I am Saori Kimura. The Daughter of Wind and Rain.
[She includes her title, like all gods should when greeting countrymen. If there's recognition, all the better. If not? No loss.]
I assume you are from Japan, or some variation thereof as well, then? May I ask what part?
[Action]
Edo. Although when I found myself here, I was on my way to Shirakawa. I stayed the night in an inn and woke up somewhere decidedly different.
[Action]
[That draws an even bigger smile. The old name, the proper name. So she wasn't a reinactor. She was someone from an earlier time. Well that was lovely.]
Yes, this is very different than Shirakawa. Quite a lot. I was in my home on Shikoku, in Takamatsu, when I woke up here. [She cants her head to one side] What year was it for you?
[Action]
[Action]
A time well after yours, presently. A little over two-hundred years, though I suspect the 24th year of Heisei will mean little. My apologies for that.
[Smiling softly, she bows once again]
Are you feeling well, Makie? I know sometimes the transition here can be a little...difficult.
[Action]
That's a stunning figure, and Makie raises fingers to her lips as she tries to grapple with it. Different places, different times...]
It's... a lot to take in. I feel a little overwhelmed, to be honest.
[Action]
[Saori gives her a (hopefully) reassuring smile and bobs her head in understanding.]
Would you...like to sit and talk over tea? It might go easier, that way.
[Action]
[Action]
[Turning, she heads toward the tea house.]
[Action]
Saori, then.
[And she follows in Saori's wake.]
[Action]
Please enter. Welcome to my favorite place in Luceti.
[She heads straight to a booth set up in a traditional Japanese style. Comfort for the newcomer was the aim after all.]
[Action]
I'm glad to see a place I recognise. [Still following, she folds gracefully down onto a cushion, shamisen still cradled in her arms.]
[Action]
As was I when I arrived. It's comforting, in a way, to have places like this. A proper style, instead of the Western one. Though, most of the population here are Westerners. [Or more outlandish sorts, she muses as a waiter comes up. Saori orders a simple green tea for herself, and after takes Makie's order, she looks down at the shamisen]
Are you a musician, then? Or is shamisen a hobby?
[Action]
[Action]
I am the same. I learned from my mother. I must confess, I've met no-one else here who can play since I arrived. It truly brightens my day to see another.
[She's made efforts to teach, to be sure. But Adele, Obi-Wan, and Derek just...do not have a grasp of the music.]
[Action]
You have an instrument here? Perhaps we could play together one day.
[Action]
[Saori brightens even further]
I have that, a koto, and my shakuhachi as well. I'd love to play with you, and perhaps we can share a few songs.
[Action]
May I ask how long you've been here?
[Action]
[She pauses, tapping her chin]
It's been almost a year, but not quite.
[Action]
[Action]
[She shrugs, not really concerned with that.] It really isn't so bad here, once you make some friends. Things become more tolerable.
[Action]
[Action]
When I first arrived, a friend let me stay with her. It's the least I can do, paying kindness forward. Especially for someone from home.
[Action] 1/2
I-- [Torn. It would be more self-sufficient and less needy to take one of those strange apartments on her own, yet Saori is familiar, and friendly, and someone who knows what she's going through.]
[Action]
[...she did say it was temporary. Perhaps that's all right.]
I accept. Thank you. I greatly appreciate your offer.
[Action]
I'm glad. You can stay as long as you like. I just, I know it's hard to comprehend all of this. It took me by surprise as well, and having people around helped me adjust. I hope it will do the same for you.
[She gives a lighthearted little laugh]
What sorts of food do you like? Helios and I do most of the cooking.
[Action]
Who is Helios? Is he... family?
[Action]
[At the other question, Saori smiles brightly, tapping her chin thoughtfully. How best to phrase the answer. What was her relationship with Helios. Family sounded right.]
Helios is family, yes. He's a very, very good friend of mine. As are the other people staying there. Though, Sabriel and Lirael keep to themselves. I'm sure you'll like them, they're all even friendlier than I am.
[Except Adele...really, but she was moving out it seemed.]
[Action]
[Action]
There are four besides me, yes. Five for the moment, but one is leaving soon. She's decided to go live on the shore for a time. [No need to mention why, the grief over losing Obi-Wan was clearly getting to Adele] As for home. No, none of us are. Sabriel and Lirael are from the same world, though Adele and Helios and I are from different versions of the same world. [She pauses] Our world, Earth. Though they are all from lands outside Japan, and from a time after Sakoku ended.
[Action]
Different versions of our world?
[Action]
[She smiles and takes out her sketchpad, doodling a bit, starting with a line.]
I believe the idea is that every decision changes the world. So for every possibility...things change. Different versions. [She draws a fork in the line] Like this. If you went left down the fork, different things would happen than if you went right. These other worlds are sort of like that. Maybe one or two things are different, maybe many. Perhaps in one world, a battle was won by the other side, or Sakoku never happened, or many other possibilities.
Do you understand the idea?
[Action]
[But close enough. They clearly share the same history, at least.]
[Action]
Does the name Daughter of Wind and Rain mean anything to you?
[Action]
[Action]
Well, as I do not know your world, I suppose it's best to tell you as plainly as I can so as to avoid surprising you later. That title is mine. I am a Myojin. One of the greater kami, and charged with maintaining the weather of Kyushu.
I...hope that does not put you off.
[Action]
You're a god.
Daughter of Wind and Rain--
At the very least, claiming to be a god--
--it's so hard to tell in this place. She doesn't know what to think-- it's such a surreal concept, the idea of sitting down and sipping tea with a powerful kami spirit and making plans to live together. If she were another woman, perhaps she'd have laughed. As it is, Makis averts her eyes before her stare becomes downright rude, still visibly working through the knowledge and trying to slot it into all the rest of the news today in a way that makes it make sense.
She's failing. Like so many other things today, Makie sidelines it for further thought later before she becomes overwhelmed.
A Myojin? Really?]
I...
...it won't put me off. [She sounds a little distracted, but eventually raises her eyes to meet Saori's gaze directly.] I may take some time getting used to the idea.
[Action]
The goddess does know it's a lot to take in, she can't fault the woman for that.]
Of course, that's normal. I know it's a lot to absorb and accept, but it's the truth. Don't worry about it though, I prefer being treated like anyone else. But if something happens, it's better you know now rather than be surprised in a dangerous situation.
[Action]
Thank you for the warning.
Is Luceti... prone to such situations?
[Action]
[Saori's smile is slightly bitter, but honest]
Every so often our...keepers...conscript us to fight in a war for them. And sometimes things happen that are dangerous, experiments that you may have heard about, and evil residents lashing out.
[Action]
Which makes that news sit all the more uncomfortably.]
Everyone? Even the children?
[Action]
[She fidgets herself, clearly not liking this any more than her new friend.]
The Malnosso don't seem to care one way or another how...wrong it is. But children are the ones most carefully watched by allies, though that's a small comfort I suppose.
[Action]
How many children are in this village? I've met some girls in their late teens, but no one younger.
[Action]
[Action]
...
...are they alone? Do their families come with them?
[Action]
[She gives a small, bitter smile.]
Sometimes friends show up. Sometimes not. Is...there someone special you hope to have come?
[Everyone has one...]
[Action]
Still. Her feelings haven't changed, regardless of her choices in life.]
There is. But I think I would rather... he never came here. This would be far more of a prison to a man of his ambition than it is to a woman like me.
[Action]
You are a very...selfless woman, Makie. Even I sometimes pine for my friends, despite knowing how much of a cage this can be.
[Action]
[Well, it's easy enough. I have no friends. Briefly she thinks of Omatsu... even Rin, but Rin is just as deserving of her ambitions as Anotsu is. Her mother is dead. It's...not something that matters, is it?]
I think I will miss him. And I would certainly be happy to see him again, but he wouldn't take well to this place at all. I don't want to see him caged.
[Action]
[She...is still not sure she could say the same]
[Action]
So how do you spend the hours here? If you don't mind my asking.
[Action]
[She's grateful for that, Makie.]
I play music, train at martial arts with friends, cook, and generally try to help people where I can. Sometimes I just explore, and I read a lot. And I teach shamisen to some friends as well.
What do you do, in your spare time?
[Action]
Up until recently, I didn't really have much. I was very busy... working.
But I do enjoy playing the shamisen. And walking. And...
[She trails off.]
[Action]
[She sounds slightly concerned, hoping things are alright]
[Action]
...I was just trying to think of other things. I must seem rather dull.
[But really, she was tossing up whether to tell Saori the truth about her shamisen. Some things are too much on the first meeting. Maybe another time. She makes a silent apology.]
[Action]
[Still shaking her head, she waves a finger to show she doesn't mind.]
Busy, perhaps. But aren't most people?
[Those without an eternity, anyway]
[Action]
I shall have to think of ways to keep myself busy.
[Action]
[Saori's smile is bright and warm, and hopefully steadying.]
Shall I show you to your new home, then?
[Action]

I've been here for three years. But don't let that bother you too much! There aren't many people in Luceti who have been here as long as I have. Usually people are only here for about a year or so, at the most.
no subject
Time... doesn't pass at home. Is that right?
no subject
That's right. I've known lots of people who have gone home and come back, and time stands still for them completely.
no subject
no subject
no subject
[It's been so long since Japan has seen any real skirmishes. Makie blinks, then narrows her eyes, looking thoughtful.] Against each other?
no subject
Basically. It's a little complicated, and no one out there is interested in telling us the full story, so I can only tell you what I've guessed and what I've experienced.
no subject
no subject
no subject
All of us? Including those who can't fight?
no subject
no subject
[That's terrible. Not only that, it's poor strategy. Unless the non-combatants are there to function as bait.]
How many casualties?
no subject
no subject
{What happens in between?
She supposes it doesn't matter.]
I'll endeavour to do the same, if one of these drafts occurs and I'm still here. If there are children...
no subject
Thanks, Makie. It's a horrible thought to think that they would be out there without anyone watching over them, but fortunately most of the people in Luceti wouldn't let that happen.

...may I ask what you do, Katara?

Hello there! Welcome to Celsius Tear. Would you like to sit down at a table?
[Action]
...yes, please. [She sees there are at least some tables with a seating arrangement she recognises. Familiarity is kind of welcome, right about now. AND BECAUSE SHE'S HAVING TROUBLE WITH THIS CONCEPT, Makie asks again:] Is there a cost?
[Action]
Not at all! Everything here is free, so you don't need to worry about that.
[He turns to start leading her towards a table; then, thinking better of it, turns back to her to double-check.]
Which kind of table would you like?
[Action]
[Action]
[He'll just lead the way over to one of them and place a menu on the table for her to look over if she'd like.]
We can do rice cakes-- we pretty much only have traditional food here, but given your outfit, something tells me that won't be a problem.
I'm Emil, by the way... what's your name?
[Action]
I am Makie Otono-Tachibana. [She bows slightly.] Two rice cakes and some green tea, then. Thank you.
[Action]
It's nice to meet you, Makie. I'll be right out with those in just a few minutes.
[And off he goes to the kitchen!]
[Action]
She nods as he leaves, and then takes a seat with some relief on a cushion, still cradling her shamisen, and takes a moment to glance over the tea house. Not quite what she's used to, but...yes. Close enough.]
[Action]
So are you new here? I don't think I've seen you around town before.
[Action]
[Action]
That's good. That means I don't have to try to explain things to you. I've been here for nearly five years and I'm still not very good at explaining this place and not ending up making things even more confusing in the process.
[Action]
People really stay here that long?
[That's...a very long time. Maybe too long, even with all her patience.]
[Action]
[Action]
[Action]
[Action]
Homes can be... difficult, sometimes.
I'm sorry. I didn't mean to bring up any awkward memories.
[Action]
No, it's okay. Even if I didn't like my town, I got to travel to all sorts of great places there. I'm glad I got the chance to do that.
[Action]
[Action]
Actually, it's only about two years old. The whole thing was Sheena's idea-- I guess they have places like this in Mizuho. That's the village she comes from.
[Action]
In another thread.] It's the most familiar thing I've seen here. Well... [Her eyes drift to the less traditional side of the teahouse.] ...a little.[Action]
[You know, just checking to be sure.]
[Action]
Well... one of them. [Unsure.]
[Action]
[See, he knows things!]
I've read a lot about it in books, although I guess they're all kind of different, huh?

When Dash spots Makie, she can't help but snort. She knows that confused look anywhere.]
I was starting to wonder when the newbies would start popping up.
/died laughing
And stares
And then stares some more
....possibly her brain just shorted out. DEAR GOD WHAT IS SHE LOOKING AT]
I saw nonhumans mentioned and felt obligated. B] Yup.
Like grinning and hovering real close before...]
Boo.
[That should do the trick.]
Beautiful |D
What are you?
no subject
[She does a mock evil laugh before bursting into more genuine laughter.]
Chill! I'm just a pegasus pony. Awesome, but generally harmless.
no subject
Doesn't quite stop her looking like she's trying to merge with the wall, though. Give her a minute.]
...I've never known a pony who could fly.
[It seemed like a reasonably harmless thing to say.]
no subject
[She shrugs.]
But trust me when I say that pegasi are a dime a dozen where I'm from, just like any other pony. It's just one of those things that makes my world unique, I guess.
no subject
It's certainly quite unique-- everyone else I've met here is human. [...she thinks.] Is everyone from your world a pony?
no subject
But again, they're pretty much a minority, especially around Ponyville.
[Because, well, it's called Ponyville for a reason.]
no subject
You sound like you come from a fascinating place. Or rather... well, I suppose it's just home to you.
no subject
[But then, everybody probably finds their homes pretty routine on some level.]
'Course, I'm guessing your world's more like most of the others' here with hue-mans being the only ones that talk. You got any magic or anything?
no subject
...I'm Makie Otono-Tachibana.
[She just introduced herself to a pony. Well. That's...not something she could ever see herself doing before this.]
[IN DA KITCHEN || Action ]
Enjoy swords, knives, metal fans, staffs, flails, (if you can think of it, it's probably in this kitchen) in boxes that are overflowing with suds. It's a wonder she hasn't cut herself yet. However, she does seem rather comfortable in this environment so this might be a good place to get some well deserved answers! ]
[IN DA KITCHEN || Action! ]
...well, she would have passed. If she hadn't passed right at the moment Tenten lifts a flail from one of those boxes, and recognition stops her in her tracks, turning to get a closer look.
It's a girl. Washing weapons. Which...isn't unheard of; daughters and sisters are often sent on the errand to polish the family's weapons. But it still feels so out of place that she can't help but stare. Not to mention take inventory. Wow. That's...more weapons than Manji ever had. Pretty impressive.
She doesn't say anything, but she is kind of standing in the doorway watching with avid curiosity, still in her New Feather dress.]
no subject
She turns, and, sure enough, it's someone dressed in the classic New Feather attire. She isn't sure what to say about this, but it did happen before with a castmate. Either way, her appearance indicates to Tenten that she's either new, or she really likes basic cotton (?). Her more fashion forward thoughts pace towards the former, but, you know, she doesn't look like she'd be concerned with appearances. Tenten turns off the faucet without looking back before beginning. ]
Hello? Do you need any help?
no subject
[Well, she's yet to realise that would be utterly obvious. Makie smiles.]
You have a lot of blades here. It took me by surprise.
no subject
[ She figures that's enough info to satisfy Makie or give her things to think up. Either way is fine. She cracks a smile at the mention of the blades. ]
I'm a Weapon's specialist back home. Most of this is my own collection from home, but, I'll admit, I sometimes horde items from the weapon's shop too whenever they're available. [ Not her problem. ] I make sure to polish them everyday, but, after I rotate through them in training, I also wash them.
no subject
She finds her voice after a moment. Maybe that was some kind of joke. Yes. She fixates on the more familiar thing, becuase that's genuinely intriguing.] You know how to use all of these? [She has her fair share of knowledge, but Makie is an anomaly at home. Another woman that fights...?] That's quite impressive.
no subject
Yep! I've mastered pretty much all of these. I mean, I'm better with some weapons more than others. For example, I doubt Luceti has a better marksperson with how accurate I am with projectiles, but I'm also able to fight very well with a sword and staff and the like. [ Tenten would love to hear how Makie is The Only One, but that's because she believes more women should be out there fighting. ]
no subject
[It's not so much she's the only one-- samurai wives are often trained in defense of their home and children, after all. The basics. One weapon. To meet someone with such a knowledge base is definitely an eye opener. Especially how openly proud Tenten seems to be.]
no subject
[ She's glad she can breathe life in Makie's perceptions, after she learns about how women warriors aren't remotely common in her place. Tenten's very big on proving a woman's worth. ]
no subject
That aches, on some level.]
...
Are there many like you from Konoha?
no subject
no subject
There are not many female fighters amongst the samurai caste.
no subject
no subject
[Not that...there's much cause for battle anymore.]
no subject
no subject
Women have strength in their own ways. [...] At home. [She doesn't mean to imply they shouldn't be able to fight.] My father let me learn swordplay as a child, but the heir to the dojo is the eldest son. I had other duties expected of me.
...I didn't mind.
[She won't speak poorly of them. How she feels about it, on the other hand, is much more complicated.]
Many women are fighters from your world, then.
no subject
Yeah. Two of the village leaders are women, and they're incredibly powerful.
no subject
He was. Five years older.
Your village sounds like a place it might be nice to visit.
no subject
Well, our village is ruled by Lady Tsunade. They say no one can stand shoulder to shoulder to her in combat, and that she's truly the strongest villager in the Leaf! They say a single hit from her kills, she doesn't even need ninjutsu to attack. I think the Leaf is the best out of all the villages. [ bias? what bias? ]
no subject
Makie's gaze slides away to the floor.] 'Remaining close'... wasn't possible.
I'm glad you have such a strong leader.
no subject
Why not? Is there some family conflict?
no subject
...my brother passed away, many years ago. I was still a child.
[The most neutral way she can put it.]
no subject
no subject
No.
My brother committed seppuku to preserve his honour. I, as the cause of his shame, was cast out.
no subject
Family members make each other shameful? What type of weird place are you living in? [ Well, she went with the most awkward direction, obviously. ]
no subject
This isn't a subject she should go into. Wouldn't have, if she weren't so thrown by facing a woman so comfortable surrounded by so many weapons. Who asked these questions.
...she hesitates. But.]
...I was born into a family that is renowned for producing skilled swordsmen for generations. The samurai bloodline is something my father, and his line before him, took pride in. Unbroken in so long... my brother was meant to shoulder that honour and prestige and take on the dojo, continuing on the proud traditions of our name.
Samurai women... don't fight. Though they might play at it as a child. I... even my play-fighting, when my brother drunkenly challenged me in front of his friends as a joke... I could not be beaten.
For the heir to a proud samurai bloodline, the heir to the dojo, not to even be able to beat his own sister... is a terrible disgrace to the family name.
no subject
no subject
...which makes her a little sad, no two ways about it. If things had been different at home...
...she doesn't fault society for shaming her. But what happened to her mother was something she was more than willing to hold a grudge for. And Manji is right; there's a reason she never gave up the sword, despite her feelings. And...
...]
Women are...
Women are valuable in their own way. Strong. Some things are just...
[She trails off. Then continues quietly.] Not everybody believes the same thing as the samurai caste.
no subject
Yeah, women are strong in every way, not just their own way. Just like how men are strong in everyw way. The Samurai caste seems to be filled with a bunch of idiots, if you ask me.
no subject
That seems to be a common viewpoint with the people I talk to.
no subject
1/2
That was unexpected.]
no subject
I...have my own, actually.
no subject
no subject
no subject
no subject
[Not quite sure what to do with a gift of a sword from another woman. Life doesn't prepare you for this kind of weirdness. :|a
After a moment, though, she just smiles.]
All right. I'll do that... thank you.
no subject
action;
Even still, he manages a friendly smile for the woman he can only assume is a New Feather. ]
Uh, hey. Welcome to Slash 'n' Crash. Are you looking for something?
action;
I am. I'm told this is where I might find weapons that come to Luceti. Is that so?
[This place is bizarre and strange, and she's already run into another woman who owned a plethora of weapons. Her request is just an ordinary one, she hopes.]
action;
It is. What are you looking for?
action;
It's a double bladed chain staff, split into three sections. About eight shaku in length.
action;
Here's where we keep our new arrivals. Anything look familiar?
action;
She follows him to the rack he points out, scanning it before breaking into a soft smile of relief, pointing to the weapon in question. Haru-no-okina.]
That one. May I take it down?
[More so he doesn't have to. It's an unwieldy weapon for a boy on a crutch.]
action;
Yeah, of course. That's...quite the weapon.
action;
action;
Oh, yeah, sure, go ahead. [ Watching intently to see what she does. ]
action;
Kind of like this.]
action;
Travel size. Nice.
action;
Is there a fee? I understand there is no money, but...
action;
[ Nnnnnnot Sokka. ]
action;
I'll do that. What's your name?
action;
action;
Makie Otono-Tachibana. [And because she's run into a few people who can't pronounce that:] Just Makie will be fine.
action;
[ It's only friendly to say, right? ]
action;
[She smiles at him more warmly, before exiting the smithy.]
[Action] // Shhhh I'm totally not late
[She cuts off as she realizes she's throwing a public tantrum and there's a person right there looking confused.] Hello. [Great first impression.]
[Action] // Never late
Children, maybe. This woman is no child.]
Hello. [She's courteous, but outbursts tend to make Makie quiet. She is trying to work out what the woman's problem is, though.]
[Action] // Damn Skippy :3
[Which is why she holds up the honey blend of tea to the new woman.]
Can you believe this? They put the honey in the tea already, and dried. This is absurd. [She folds her arms and huffs.] Age of Legends, my foot. Why would anyone dry honey?
[You agree with her that's stupid, right? Right?]
[Action]
[Action]
[NOPE. She's done with the honey tainted tea. And totally looking for something else, okay okay.] It's so hard to find anything in these places... [Not really, but she comes from a time/place where you don't find things, you ask for what you want or you let the shopowners get it for you. None of this actually looking for things. She hasn't decided if that is convenient or terrible yet.]
[Action]
[Herself, well. This place is uncomfortably much easier to deal with than home.]
[Action]
What kind of tea do you prefer?
[Action]
[Action]
[Searches about for green tea because unlike honey, that sounds fascinating.]
[Action]
Slightly bitter. But it's light.
[Best she can come up with, yup.]
[Action]
You don't have to add honey to it, right? [... She really doesn't like honey.]
[Action]
[Sounds altogether too sweet to her, she can agree on that.]
[Action]
Are you new here?
[Action]
Makie Otono-Tachibana. I arrived a few hours ago.
[Action]
I've only been here a couple of months... it takes a lot of getting used to. [AKA: she totally isn't used to it yet.]
[Action]
[Action]
[Says the woman who used to live in a pit of vipers and even then had trouble navigating the personality clashes and politics despite being the leader.]
[Action]
no subject
That's a nice banjo you got there, babe. I've been known to make a little music myself.
no subject
Largely because Makie is still standing there with her hand wrapped around the neck of the shamisen and a look that's carefully blank as she stares a hole through the wall. She's thinking someone stole her weapon, scenarios running through her mind, and as such his words go entirely unheard.
Try again?]
no subject
Mandolin?
no subject
You're asking about my instrument? It's a shamisen.
no subject
[She seems a bit distracted, sure, but maybe she's just a bit of an airhead. He can live with that.]
no subject
I just arrived today. I'm still in the process of picking up all my belongings.
My name is Makie Otono-Tachibana.
no subject
It's a pleasure, Makie. But if you're trying to acquaint yourself with the place, I'm just the man to see.
no subject
no subject
no subject
Likewise. [Distractions over shamisen aside, Makie's still automatically polite.] You are...just the man to see?
no subject
That I am. That I am. In fact, now that you've got your little guitar here, how about I get you a drink. Nothing like a little- what's it you drink in Japan, sake? Yeah, nothing like a little sake to calm the nerves.
no subject
...maybe.] I should like that.
Tell me, Mr Horner... is this shop the only place a woman's belongings might arrive in?
no subject
Uh, maybe over there? Is it that time of the month?
no subject
Not quite. If I owned... if I owned a knife for self-defence, perhaps. Would it arrive here?
no subject
[So he begins to lead the way.]
no subject
Thank you. You're most kind.
no subject
[Someday he might just remember the name of that instrument. But it will not be this day.]
no subject
I work. [She also doesn't want to get into this subject, actually. Ahah.] But I was travelling to see my father before I came here, so I suppose... I wan't doing much of anything.
no subject
[He's not so proud of that, really. But to be fair, there's not much a dragon can do in the mundy world.]
no subject
no subject
no subject
no subject
no subject
You'd first have to explain what kryptonite is.
no subject
It's a saying. My 'special weakness', basically.
no subject
That's a terrible weakness to have. You could exploit it any number of ways.
no subject
no subject
no subject
no subject
no subject
[Jack opens the door to said establishment to usher her in.]
no subject
[Really? She enters with a nod of thanks and then stops still, staring over the racks of weapons inside. Huh. There's quite a few things in here.]
Do I need to speak to someone?
no subject
Nah. You just gotta find what belongs to you and take it with you. [Though he's eyeing the bars. He doesn't remember those being there.]
no subject
no subject
[But as he looks around, he sees the section where new weapons are kept and heads there. It seems these aren't locked up.]
no subject
That rack ... those weapons belong to new arrivals, don't they? None of them are made by the smiths here?
no subject
no subject
...bladed killer?
no subject
[He holds out his jacket where he's got a pistol tucked away. Since half the town is packing, it seemed a good idea for him to do the same.]
no subject
[
This can't be taken terribly in any way.]no subject
... my other one is bigger.
no subject
Regardless, I'm sure it's not the size of your weapon that counts, Mr Horner.
no subject
[And I'm an expert. His thought was accompanied by raised eyebrows and a knowing smirk.
Then he remembered why they were there.]
Do you see your knife?
no subject
But my other weapon is here.
[She lifts the three-section pike off the rack.]

"That's yours?"

Though it's true she doesn't look much like she can wield it. Less flattering men have described her arms as frail in the past. She folds it in on itself in a Z-shape and crosses back to the nearest available flat surface, resting her shamisen on it gently, and avoiding Jack's gaze.

"I hope you know how to use it, babe. There's a war on in this world, so knowing a little ass kicking will come in handy."

And released. "Crazy," she agrees softly, collecting her shamisen from the counter, and she wraps her shawl around it for protection. It's too warm here to wear it anyway. "What an interesting place this is."

She shifts a little, and offers him a smile. "It was a pleasure to meet you, Mr Horner."

[action]
Hey. Anything special you want? [No idea who this is, but that rarely stops her.] We have pretty much everything.
[action]
[action]
Has she heard of it.]
Yeah. Yeah, I think I have. Coming right up, ma'am.
[While she struggles not to let her laughter escape as a snort. Sencha.]
Y'know, where I'm from we call that "tea".
Re: [action]
This is a teahouse. You have many types on display, I see. Sencha is but one.
I would very much like one, thank you.
[action]
No, I mean...that's just normal for me. It's these other places that come up with the really weird stuff.
[action]
Then I'm glad to meet someone who is familiar with it. There's so much about this place that is strange. You are from Japan?
[action]
[action]
[And she'll find a seat in the more traditional section.]
[action]
[action]
What sort of place is Mizuho?
[action]
[And they like it that way.]

...our monsters only exist in stories. [Or are the human kind. But everyone has those.]
I'm Makie Otono-Tachibana. [And she tries the tea. It's a taste of home, and her eyes close thankfully.]
[action]
Sheena. Fujibayashi. [The pause is noticeable and Sheena looks surprised that she introduced herself with her full name.]
[action]
[action]
You're being way too nice. Those things were nasty.
[action]
I was always raised to be polite. I find smaller bugs nasty enough as it is-- you have my sympathy.

I guess that's one thing Luceti has going for it - not much of that stuff walking around waiting to get you.
[action]
What about the drafts and experiments? Does it get more dangerous then?
[action]

[action]
But their reason for making us fight just sounds to me like they're cowards about doing it themselves most of the time.
[action]
It seems so... peaceful. For a village at war.
[action]
[action]
How often is there trouble?
[action]

[She doesn't encourage rebellion. Makie's pretty sure that won't help-- but there is curiosity as to whether that's been tried before.]
[action]
[She thinks they stopped it from happening to one person one time, but that is not her story to tell.]
[action]
No matter if you're a woman or a child. That's rather different from my... world.
